Cosmetic Lasers
In this day and age, technology is used in every aspect of our lives. Beauty is no exception. With different technologies becoming more available and affordable every day, the general public is looking more and more to better, long term solutions for their cosmetic needs.
Cosmetic lasers especially, are on the rise.
There are two main types of lasers: ablative and nonablative. This just means that some lasers are meant to get rid of the surface layers of damaged skin, while others go deeper into the tissue without harming any surface layers. These lasers can be broken down into hundreds of sub categories, with just as many different uses. Here are a few of the more popular uses for cosmetic lasers and their benefits.
Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is one of the most common uses for cosmetic lasers. The science behind this procedure is based on the Theory of Selective Photothermolysis. This theory states that a laser beam applied to living tissue will have different effects on different parts of the body (hair, skin, etc.), depending on the absorption spectrum of the laser.
Every person has a slightly different skin tone and hair color, so results are different for everyone. Luckily, there are so many different types and variations of lasers that you can be assured that there is one that will work for all of your clients. A few examples of different laser types are:
- Alexandrite: 755 nm, is near-infrared and is used for people with pale skin.
- Pulsed diode array: 810 nm, is near infrared and is used for people with pale to medium skin tones.
- Nd: YAG laser: 1064 nm, is near infrared and is used for people with darker skin tones.
Multiple sessions may be needed, depending on the skin and hair type of the individual, and the area that is being worked on.
The benefits of laser hair removal are numerous. It is long lasting. In most cases, the time for the separate treatments is far less than the actual benefits of the results. It is a non-invasive procedure that is perfectly safe as long as professionals are performing it properly. It is considered a much less painful alternative to other hair removal methods, such as waxing or shaving. Laser hair removal is also very useful in removing hair from large areas such as legs or backs, saving time from having to treat those areas yourself. Say goodbye to that razor!
Laser Treatment of Skin Conditions
In the society we live in, a youthful appearance is a prized quality. Everyone wants to look younger, and there are thousands of different makeups, creams and gels that claim to help you do so. Unfortunately, most of these are a quick fix and will not help you to keep that youthful glow long term.
Luckily, with the advancements in different systems, laser skin treatments are becoming more and more affordable, and unlike other products, will give you lasting results. Here are just a few uses for cosmetic lasers in different types of skin treatments.
- Getting rid of lines and wrinkles. A more aggressive ablative laser is best for these types of treatments, as well as combinations of different techniques with different types of lasers.
- Acne and acne scar removal. Whether you are young or old, no one likes acne. There are many different treatments out there, but sometimes the creams and the gels are not enough to get rid of stubborn acne. LED laser technology has been proven to be dramatically effective in the removal of current acne. And what about those acne scars that just won’t go away? There are quite a few different types of lasers that are effective, but the CO2 laser seems to be the leader of the pack.
- Skin lifts and tightening. As we age, gravity seems to take an effect and our skin just does not hold its elasticity like it used to. Most procedures done with a cosmetic laser produce some sort of skin tightening as a by-product, but as with the obliteration of acne scars, the laser that is the most popular choice for this particular treatment is a CO2 laser. The use of the laser on the skin encourages the body to make more collagen, thus increasing the area’s elasticity.
- Tattoo removal. Tattoo removal is increasing in popularity. With the new laser technologies tattoos do not have to be as permanent as they once were. The CO2 and Nd:YAG lasers are the most commonly used tools for this particular procedure. So whether you’re regretting that shoulder tattoo you got in your twenties, or it’s just time for something new, tattoo removal is now a viable and affordable option.
- Varicose veins. Not only can varicose veins be unsightly to look at, they can also be quite painful. They usually effect the superficial veins of the legs and are most common in pregnant women, and those who are older in age. IPL, Nd:YAG and diode lasers are common choices for these procedures. Laser treatment for varicose veins is much less invasive than similar options, such as surgery, and is much less painful. In some cases you may even be able to return to your normal activities right after a session!
These are just a few of the more common uses of lasers in the industry. There are many more out there, and with cosmetic laser treatments getting more and more popular, there has never been a better time to get in the industry. The use of most cosmetic lasers is not highly regulated in the USA. This means that you do not necessarily need to be a medical professional to get in the industry. There are many different programs, certifications, etc. that use the systems’ latest technologies and offer training in the use of cosmetic lasers. Many businesses even offer hands on training. With the laser technologies being more accessible to the public, it is even easier to get involved.
So How Can I Get Involved Without Breaking the Bank?
Many people want to get into this blooming industry, but think it’s impossible due to the high price tags on a good laser. It’s true, some of these lasers can get very pricey.
